Jeffrey & Floyd: In Their Words

Jeffrey and Floyd met at the Round Up Saloon, an LGBTQ country and western bar set in Dallas, Texas. After 11 years of being together, they celebrated with a private wedding ceremony in Hawaii, surrounded by a glorious sunset and the waves of the Pacific.

“I had just moved to Dallas from San Antonio and was out at the Round Up and saw him dancing with who I thought was his boyfriend. It turned out that they were just dancing friends. So, I sort of followed Floyd for a couple of weeks at the bar and finally asked him to dance. That was all it took. I asked him to dance with me on December 5, 2003. We have been together ever since, for almost 16 years now.

We planned our wedding celebration for Maui on a small beach just off of Makena Surf Beach. We were so lucky, as the beach was completely empty and thus it was just the two of us and our wedding crew. The mood was joyous. We wanted something special and private, so we didn’t have any guests at our wedding. Everything about the day was absolute perfection. From the beach atmosphere, to the weather, we couldn’t have asked for anything better. After the ceremony, we had a quiet dinner together in Kihei Maui, before heading back to our hotel.

Our wedding was celebrated in the traditional Hawaiian way. The ceremony started with a blessing of flower leis. While staining in the ocean waves, we continued with the blessing of the rings. We exchanged our vows and tied our hands together with a traditional rope of shells as the sun set behind us.”

Floyd is my soulmate. I know this without a doubt. He makes me smile every single day and I still get butterflies in my stomach when I listen to his phone messages that he leaves me when he is out of town. No couple is a perfect match, but we both enjoy the same things. Floyd brings out the best in me and I’m a much better man because of him.

My first piece of advice is not to rush into anything and to let it happen on its own. We were together for 11 years before we got married, and thus we got to know one another very well. Once you are ready to take that step towards marriage, think a great deal about your budget and communicate that to one another. Make sure to plan a wonderful honeymoon to a fabulous location like Bora Bora or the Maldives. Make incredible memories and enjoy your time together, because that's what life is about. The best advice I can offer to any couple is to communicate openly with each other.”

An excerpt from Jeffrey and Floyd’s wedding vows reads, “You’re my soulmate, my best friend, and I can’t wait to continue this journey with you by my side.”
